Our Petition to Oregon’s Governor

We have been circulating the following petition since 2005. Although there are many reasons to oppose the war, we are focused on our own state.

Whereas, a disproportionately large number of Oregonians have been killed or severely injured in the war in Iraq;Whereas Oregonians throughout the state have been hurt by the loss of federal funds for education, human services, and infrastructure that have been diverted into this war;

Whereas, Oregonians have paid nearly two billion dollars in taxes to fund the Iraq War (as of March, 2006);

Whereas, the Oregon National Guard was created for the protection of Oregon citizens from natural disasters and threats of violence, has, instead, been used to fight an illegal war, leaving communities ill-prepared and vulnerable;

Whereas the majority of Oregonians are opposed to this war and believe that the continuation of this war is making us less safe;

Whereas, the Governor of Oregon is the elected leader of the state and, as such, represents the people of Oregon;

We therefore call on Governor Kulongoski to publicly oppose the war in Iraq, to call for the immediate return of the Oregon National Guard troops serving in Iraq, and oppose any additional deployment of Oregon National Guard to Iraq.
